What is integrative therapy for children?
Every person is different and unique, and deserves care that reflects their specific needs. Our treatment plans are less restrictive and are flexible to provide you the best possible care.
Children benefit from integrative therapy that takes a holistic approach, focused on treating the whole person in mind, body, heart and spirit. InTouch offers kids a well rounded health and wellness treatment plan that includes a variety of integrative therapies.
Person and family-centered care
Pain, illness, and trauma not only affect the individual who experienced it, but everyone within their circle. This is the cornerstone of an integrative healing approach.
Integrative therapy seeks to provide the ideal health and wellness outcomes for the family dynamic. Through taking a humanistic treatment approach that addresses the individual needs of your child, and your family, it promotes transformative healing for the whole – as in everyone.
When might therapy for children be required?
If your child has experienced pain, trauma, or illness – therapy may be necessary. Integrative Therapy allows children to cope with their experiences, and prepare them for future obstacles.
Traumatic events in childhood
Traumatic events cause real physical, emotional, and psychological harm to not only adults, but children as well. Exposure to one traumatic event can increase vulnerability, and the likelihood of further traumatic events.
Without treatment that provides the child the support and tools they need to cope with what has happened, they can struggle to avoid, and cope with, future traumatic events or life experiences.
Some examples of traumatic childhood events are:
- sexual abuse
- physical abuse
- domestic violence
- health-related trauma
- acts of war and terrorism
- natural disasters
- traumatic loss
- medical trauma
Impacts of Childhood Trauma
Each child may express their stress differently. How they present this stress depends on their age, the experiences they have had, and the personality of the child.
Toxic stress can occur when a child experiences strong, frequent, or prolonged challenges. This can include chronic illness, physical or emotional abuse, neglect, caregiver substance abuse or mental illness, exposure to violence, and family economic hardship.
Signs of stress in children include:
- Separation anxiety
- Emotional lability
- Poor communication skills
- Poor relationship with food (over/under eating)
- Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
- Difficulty concentrating
- Feelings of guilt
- Anxiety
Benefits of Integrative Therapy for Children
Integrative therapies can improve emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical well being by encouraging positive habits and building resilience. Integrative Therapy can also bring your family closer together as you learn to accept and listen to one another and find coping strategies that work for your family.
These treatments can help your child cope with their pain, anxiety, illness, and other difficult circumstances in their life and prepare them for the future. Addressing stress responses are critical for the health and wellbeing of your child, and for you, as having less stress has been proven to prevent some chronic diseases.

Common Misconceptions About Therapy for Children
There are many misconceptions about therapy for children and the impact it can have on their well being. These assumptions prevent millions from seeking treatment, and can cause long term damage to children that will affect them for the rest of their lives.
Some of these misconceptions about therapy for children include:
- Therapy makes things worse by “opening up” the issue
- Therapy solves your problems – The goal of therapy is not to make the problem disappear, but to provide healthy coping mechanisms and create resilience.
- Holistic therapies are not based on science – Holistic therapies are an integration of evidence-based treatments and fill a gap in western healthcare.
- People who seek therapy are weak – Seeking help is hard. It requires considerable strength, and honesty, to advocate for your children and family.
