    Teens

Teens often struggle with unique challenges, we can meet those challenges to help you and your family.

Mental Health Issues Among Teens

Teens often have mental health needs that can make every day life challenging. Many teens experience:

  • Anxiety – The feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. You can learn more about anxiety by visiting our Anxiety page.
  • Depression – A common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. You can learn more about depression by visiting our Depression page.
  • Behavioral Disorders – A pattern of disruptive behaviors that last at least 6 months and cause problems in school, at home, and in social situations. All children show some of these behaviors at times, but behavioral disorders are more serious.
  • Personality Disorders – A mental disorder in which you have a rigid and unhealthy pattern of thinking, functioning, and behaving. Teens with a personality disorder have trouble perceiving and relating to situations and people.
  • Eating Disorders – A range of mental conditions in which there is a persistent disturbance of eating behavior and impairment of physical or mental health.
  • Psychosis – Severe mental condition in which thought and emotions are so affected that contact is lost with eternal reality.

Signs and Symptoms of Mental Health Issues

Some common warning signs of mental health problem among teens are:

  • Mood Swings – An abrupt and apparently unaccountable change of mood.
  • Appetite loss – The loss of desire to eat at your typical mealtimes.
  • Disturbed Sleep Patterns – Interruptions of the amount, and quality of sleep.
  • Trouble in Concentration – Decreased ability to focus your thoughts on something.
  • Lack of Interest in Daily activities – A reduced interest in activities an individual used to enjoy, as well as a decreased ability to feel pleasure.
  • Social Isolation – A lack and avoidance of social connections.

Common Causes of Mental Health Issues

Some of the common causes are:

  • Academic Pressure
  • Peer Pressure
  • Social Media
  • Childhood Trauma
  • Developing Prefrontal Cortex
  • Fewer Coping Skills

Treatment Options for Mental Health

Treatment varies according to the stages of the healing process. Some common treatments are:

  • Counseling – Counseling helps people identify goals and potential solutions to the problems they are facing. Counseling for teens can also improve their communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change for optimal mental health.
  • Individual Psychotherapy – Individual Psychotherapy is useful for many situations that cause stress, anger, grief, and conflict. In a private setting, an individual and their therapist can explore many issues including; problem solving, conflict resolution, behavior problems, expression of thoughts and emotions, and the individual’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Interpersonal Therapy – Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) can help teens understand how their relationships affect their life. This therapy has two goals: to help teens function better socially, and to reduce their feelings of depression.
  • Behavioral Therapy – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a short-term therapy used to look at the relationship between the individuals behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Benefits from this therapy include: a support network, raises self-esteem, the creation of positive thoughts, anger management, developments of better communication skills, improved coping skills, and relapse prevention of mental disorders.
  • Family Therapy – Assists in improving relationships with your partner, children, and other family members.
  • Medication – Some medications can reduce symptoms and prevent relapses of a psychiatric disorder.
  • Integrative Touch Therapy (ITT) – Here at Integrative Touch, we provide Integrative Touch Therapy for teens in need of improving their mental wellbeing. ITT is a healing framework and hands-on therapeutic approach that allows participants to focus on the things they most want to heal in their lives at a mind, body, and spirit level.

It’s like no therapy I’ve ever received. I was more comfortable with my wellness team after one session than I was with other therapists after months. They listen.

Thank you for facilitating, encouraging and supporting such a loving and peaceful presence during my daughter’s end-of-life journey. We are navigating and experiencing our grief while also being reminded of the power of pain. It is in our pain that we truly understand the depth  of our love. Peace and many blessings.
